Airport terminal in the United Kingdom.

How to return your car to the airport

Just as when you’re collecting your hire car, dropping off a rental car at an airport in the United Kingdom is straightforward — just follow these steps.

Returning your car rental at the airport can be daunting especially for first-timers. Here are three simple things to keep in mind when you return your vehicle at an airport.

  • Clean the car thoroughly before returning it: Ensure that the car is as clean as it was when you picked it up. Remove your trash and dirt out of the vehicle. You will be charged for a cleaning fee if the rental company will need to do more than a quick vacuum.

  • Fill up the tank before returning the car: You will be charged extra if you don’t return the vehicle with a full fuel tank.

  • Return your car on time: To avoid paying for a late fee, return your hire car on time. If you get stuck in traffic and you think you will be late, call and notify your rental car supplier immediately.

Will I get charged if I return my rental car late?

If you do not return your vehicle on time, you may be charged for additional hours or an additional day of rental depending on the car hire provider. Please note that the charge will be applied to your credit card used for security at the start of your rental. But, here’s the good news. There is usually a grace period at the end of a rental, so make sure to check and review this with your hire provider to avoid confusion.
